Our two newest employees just returned from the 2013 Water Quality Association’s Aquatech Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. Our dispatcher: Tara and our office manager: Katherine are both new to the water industry, so we figured a 3 day crash course in all things water was just what they needed.

Both girls noted the chemistry as the most interesting thing that they learned while away. With a better understanding of how water treatment equipment operates on a molecular basis, they both feel more comfortable answering questions for customers.

Also noteworthy from the convention was the emersion of many new purified ice/water dispensers, similar to our Super Iguassu that we recently started carrying. The variety of these kinds of dispensers confirms our suspicion that these are going to be very popular in the near future. Not to mention the fact we can’t keep them in stock.

What’s next for these rookie aqua aficionados? WQA Certifications. All of our employees are required to obtain and maintain certifications related to water treatment, and our office staff is no exception. Hit the books girls!

Concord, MA has become one of the first communities to ban the sale of bottled water in individual serving bottles. These bans that are popping up in Universities and “Green” businesses across the nation are highly controversial. Proponents for the ban argue that the water companies are draining area aquifers and selling it back to the citizens with a high environmental impact.

Opponents of the ban question the effectiveness of it, and argue that the government is eliminating a healthy alternative to sugary sodas and beverages. Both have legitimate points, but the discussion shows no signs of resolution mainly due to the fact that the filtration technology cost has reduced to a break-even point and even surfaced as a cheaper alternative than buying individual bottles. The bottled water industry can be likened to the battery industry in that the best option for batteries used to be individually purchased double a’s. However, with the technology of lithium ion, we now charge our own batteries.

The same is true for bottled water. It is now cheaper in most cases to filter your own water rather than pay someone else to sell it to you in bottles. However, while the demand for AA batteries has gone down, the bottled water industry has grown by leaps and bounds. The hope of legilators is bans like the one in Concord will help to change peoples’ habits and correct the dissonance in the demand curve relative to the technology available. The suspicion of bottled water fans is that the ban will only drive up bottled water sales in the surrounding areas. Only time will tell.

With talks of congress on the verge of passing a bill that would allow for a 19-square-mile of federal land transfer to the city of Yerington, it is evident copper mining would return to Lyon County. Although it would stimulate the overwhelming 65% of unemployment in the reservation alone, the Native Americans Paiutes’ recall the devastation the Anaconda copper mine had over their ground water.

You can’t drink the water in Yerington Paiute reservation because it could kill you, according to the EPA the designated federal Superfund sites ground water was poisoned by the old Anaconda copper mine which stopped production in 1978.

Federal law requires that the reservation’s drinking water must be bottled and provided by British Petroleum, the responsible party for the Anaconda ecological disaster.

Although the Native Americans Paiutes’ are very wary of this bill passing, it would bring the once-thriving copper mining economy of Lyon County back in a big way and create many jobs that are much needed for tribal residents. All we can really do is regulate the safety precautions and take extra measures so that we don’t repeat the same events that greatly devastated the lands, the ground water and the Tribal reservation resident’s way of life.

Yes, we all know that recyclable plastic bottles are bad for the environement, but do you know how bad?? After extensive research on the web, I found that :

80% of all platic bottles are not recycled

38 million plastic bottles go to the dump each year

24 million gallons of oil are needed to produce a billion plastic bottles (that’s the equivalent of filling the bottle up with oil to make it)

The average american consumes 167 bottles of water a year

Bottling and shipping water is the LEAST energy efficient method ever used to supply water!

So, what is Truckee Meadows Water Systems doing to help combat this problem? We are giving away a free 16 ounce Nagene bottle to everyone of our customers! Please stop by 245 Winter street and pick one up today.

If you are a commercial rental customer, we will be stopping by to drop your bottle off as a way of saying “thanks for your business.”

If you’re in Truckee, Tahoe, Reno, Sparks, Carson City, Gardnerville, Minden, Dayton, Fallon, Fernley, Stagecoach or anywhere else in Northern Nevada or Northern California- we can help you.

We specialize in Arsenic reduction, water conditioners, iron and odor filters, bottle-less water coolers, laboratory grade water, deionized warter, and much more.

There’s been a lot of talk lately about alkalized water. The theory is that high PH water can penetrate the blood cells easier – thus are better at fighting cancer cells. We offer the Ion Ways Delphina and Venus systems . See website for details.

These systems are very popular in Asia and have really taken off in the USA .

Reverse Osmosis Systems are great for removing total dissolved solids (arsenic, nitrates, lead, fluoride, iron, manganese ,uranium etc.) but unfortunately also lower the ph in the water. We now offer a POST CORAL FILTER that will raise the ph back up to around 9 .

So if you’re inTahoe, Truckee, Reno, Sparks, Carson City, Fallon, Fernley, Minden, Gardnerville or anywhere in Northern Nevada, contact us for more information.
